(c) 2013 Matt Linguini

In the course of this workshop, children are initiated to the art of mosaic making, using paper. They will choose their palette of colors via a selection of paper cut-outs that they will then paste. In this process, children will re-interpret the landscapes and portraits they chose to create an original and unique work of art.

This workshop is open to children from 3 to 13 years of age. Children under 4 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

A few words on mosaics

A mosaic is traditionally a piece of art produce by assembling small pieces of colored glass, ceramics, stones and other materials. It is mainly used within the scope of decorative arts and interior decoration.

Mosaics are dated as far back as 3000 years before our era. They appeared first in Mesopotamia. Ancient Greeks and Romans have used mosaics to ornate their homes, temples and public spaces. The Byzantine Empire produced many breathtaking mosaics, as well as the first Christian who ornate their basilics and churches with religious scenes.

Paper mosaics, as they presented during this workshop, find their origins in the “collage” techniques of Cubism, Dada, Surrealism and, as from the 1950s, in Pop Art.
